Carol Cruises to Championship Win

15.09.2008

Scottish race driver Carol Brown clinched the SMRC Legends Cars Championship at Knockhill yesterday with yet another commanding performance.

The Falkirk-based flyer completely dominated the 2008 Legends series from the outset, winning overall in all but one of the eight race weekends so far.

With a healthy lead in the standings going into Sunday’s penultimate round, Brown knew all she had to do was finish in the points in each of the day’s three races to ensure the title was hers.

In heat one she started 19th on the grid, but displayed her usual scorching pace to carve her way through the field and finish in eighth place. With her nearest rival in the championship Tony Caig failing to finish it meant only a disaster would prevent her from securing the championship in the next heat.

Starting from second on the grid in heat two gave Carol the best possible chance of securing the points she needed, and she produced a measured drive to finish in third and guarantee the title was hers.

Despite the final race of the day being merely a formality, Carol still battled through from 17th on the grid to finish in sixth place without pushing too hard.

Having proved she is more than a match for the boys by winning the Legends series, Carol is now hoping to secure the backing to move towards her goal of competing in the British Touring Car Championship.

Carol Brown said:
“I’m so happy to have finally wrapped up the title, it’s definitely the highlight of my career so far. It’s a fantastic achievement for me to have raced against such a large field of really good opponents and consistently been fastest. I have to say a big thank you to championship organiser Aly Hunter for all the support he’s given me, as well my father Billy and my boyfriend Phil who have always been there to help on race weekends. I’ve been trying to find out if another woman has won a major race championship in Scotland before but no-one seems to know. If anybody out there can confirm whether I’m the first or not I’d be grateful! Now the title is in the bag I can work on my plans for next season and hopefully attract sponsors who want to be associated with success and can help me go on to compete at a higher level.”
